Same nonsense
[edit]I tried to dip my toe back into helping here, and the same user just mass-reverts everything - now claiming WP:THESIS disallows theses as a source (it doesn't); it's a historic thesis on the history of religion on the islands being used for non-controversial claims, quoting 200-year old letters between NB politicians and bureaucrats at the time about religion and smuggling and such on the island. I have no doubt he'd have the same complaint if, instead of reffing the thesis, I reffed the footnote in the thesis as "Letter between Lord Hilton and Lord Beaverbrook, May 17 1814" or whatever as WP:PRIMARY. He just mass reverts it all across every article - it's bad-faith and I'm sick of it. New Yathrib - Fundy Historian (talk) 21:19, 4 August 2026 (UTC)
- New Yathrib - Fundy Historian, I had a look at the situation and I can sort of see both sides... I don't think Magnolia677 is acting in bad faith, I think you both have the same goal of providing good articles to our readers, but differing ideas on how to get there... It is true that citing a thesis is usually not ideal, for a number of reasons... Reliability is one thing, but one also has to wonder if information which can only be found in a Masters thesis actually belongs on Wikipedia? In most cases, I'd say it doesn't, but that's something that has to be determined by editors on a case-by-case basis... I cited a BA Honours thesis on Toponymy of Nova Scotia (Kemp 2021) because coverage of Mi'kmaq toponymy in the province is a bit lacking but I felt including more detail about the suffixes was important. I doubt anyone will ever take issue with that.
- It seems like this disagreement may have fizzled out on its own, but in the future, if you're encountering an issue like this across a wide variety of articles I suggest posting at WT:CANADA for input from others. You can follow the trail at Wikipedia talk:Canadian Wikipedians' notice board/Archive 34#French translations to see what a resolution might look like. If no one comes to your defence after posting there, it's generally a safe assumption that you're either wrong or nobody else cares and you should move on. Try your best not to take this stuff personally, or at least, don't let on that you're taking it personally -- keeping cool will make it a lot easier for others to take you seriously. Hope that all makes sense, let me know if you have any questions. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 17:31, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- Eh, I don't get it - and I hate farming things out to committee; I mean if I use an unconventional source to claim the city was attacked by dragons - got it, that's far-fetched so remove it - if I claim someone owned a certain farm on a small island, unless there's dispute about the fact then it shouldn't matter...I mean realistically most historic people's birth/death dates on Wikipedia are being pulled from "unconventional" sources like genealogy websites, gravestones, etc...should be fine unless there's some dispute or it's a controversial claim. But if a gravestone says "And his daughter Lucretia" and CNN and CBC never mentioned such a daughter...I'm going with adding a reference to the daughter to preserve information even if it's unconventionally sourced. New Yathrib - Fundy Historian (talk) 18:54, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- The way I see it, editing Wikipedia is a great privilege. The reason we put our work here and not on our own website is because here people actually read it. Part of maintaining the privilege of editing Wikipedia is figuring out the community norms, and doing your best to adhere to them. It's important to know the rules, and even more important to know how the rules are actually applied... I think you may need to reassess your approach to editing if you want to avoid continued scrutiny. "Farming things out to committee" as you put it is kind of the entire model for settling disagreements here, so not being able to deal with that is going to be a problem. If I were you, I'd spend some time trying to follow "the rules" as closely as you can, even if only to get some heat off you, and later on you'll figure out where you can bend them. MediaKyle (talk) 20:10, 5 August 2026 (UTC)

Special Wikimania issue
This is a special Wikimania issue of the Bulletin. We'll be back to our regular format in the next issue
- Wikimania Paris: Paris hosted Wikimania 2026 as Wikipedia celebrates 25 years of free knowledge. Catch up on missed sessions of Wikimania 2026 by checking session pages in the program.
- Meet the Wikimedians of the Year 2026: The beloved Wikimedian of The Year awards shine the light on exceptional individuals, and through them, on the whole Wikimedia community. Learn about all of this year's winners.
- Daily highlights from Wikimania:
- Public policy advocacy: Overview of Wikimania 2026 sessions about public policy advocacy. While not all sessions are recorded, you can watch some by clicking the session.
- Users with extended rights pre-conference: 190 users with extended rights from all around the world gathered at a Wikimania pre-conference, to exchange experiences, learn from each other and connect.
- Media coverage: The event was mentioned in many media outlets as part of wider coverage about the Wikimedia projects including in Le Monde, El Nacional and Radio France.

- Improvement to Reading Lists: Community feedback around the placement of watchstar and watchlist buttons for the Reading Lists beta feature has been incorporated. 93% of participating users reported that it was useful. This feature allows saving articles for later reading – a wishlist item to bring the functionality to web.
- Creating custom edit suggestions: With the TextMatch feature, volunteers can now create custom local suggestions within the VisualEditor for improving Wikipedia articles. You can find examples from other communities for inspiration. Share your feedback.
- Dark mode for Content Translation: Content Translation now supports dark mode, fulfilling a Community Wishlist request. This brings the tool in line with the accessibility features available in the Vector 2022 and Minerva skins, helping reduce visual fatigue for users translating content.
- Mobile page preview: Based on the conclusion of the experiment, mobile page previews feature will not be rolled out. The experiment showed flat retention and negative indicator metrics, suggesting that mobile web readers preferred navigating directly to linked articles rather than using page previews.
- Scaling of Explore Feed to iOS: The Explore Feed Refresh initiative was tested with new and casual Wikipedia app readers. The refreshed feed helps readers discover new and relevant content. After a 10.5% increase in engagement with the feed, Home Feed redesign will be scaled to iOS by applying the learnings from the Android release.
- Improving Account Creation process: After running several Account Creation Experiments to improve registration completion rates, a new version of the username field on Create Account has been rolled out. Read more.
- Latest experiments: An ongoing experiment is testing to better guide Temporary Account users toward full account creation. See all live, upcoming, and completed experiments in Product & Technology.
- Tech News: The latest highlights from Tech News week 30 and 31 include that now wikis can restrict editing in the “User” namespace to only the page owner and certain user groups. See also the 50 community submitted tasks that were resolved over the last two weeks.
- New bot detection system for all wikis: After a successful trial, which showed evidence of both deterring bots and being easier to use, hCaptcha (our new bot detection system) has been rolled out to all wikis, for account creation, and for most newcomer edits.

Concern regarding Draft:Bearly's House of Blues & Ribs
[edit]
Hello, MediaKyle. This is a bot-delivered message letting you know that Draft:Bearly's House of Blues & Ribs, a page you created, has not been edited in at least five months. Drafts that have not been edited for six months may be deleted, so if you wish to retain the page, please edit it again or request that it be moved to your userspace.
If the page has already been deleted, you can request it be undeleted so you can continue working on it.
Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia. FireflyBot (talk) 18:06, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
Good article nominations RfC
[edit]Hi MediaKyle,
There is an ongoing Request for Comment (RfC) at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/August 2026 RfC, which you may be interested in because in the past year, you have nominated or reviewed more than one good article nomination. This message has also been sent to all subscribers to the Good Article Gazette. The RfC contains many proposals (33 at the time of writing), which are split into the following categories: nominators, reviewers, reviews, volunteer roles, reviewing initiatives, and others. However, you are more than welcome to add any proposals of your own that you wish to put to the community.
By the end of September, all the proposals will have been closed by an uninvolved editor, either as a consensus for one of the options or with no consensus. At this point, editors will be invited again to develop these proposals into coherent policy and implement them.
Thank you for your contributions to the good articles project, and I look forward to your input! (in solidarity), JacobTheRox(talk|contributions) 16:02, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
Wondering why
[edit]you removed so many references (including ones from entertainment business sources like Variety and Deadline) in this edit from Joslyn Rose Lyons. - Shearonink (talk) 17:48, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- I think you should take a look at the preceding edits. You're welcome to add back good sources that may have been inadvertently removed; I expect the prior edit by a TA was block evasion. MediaKyle (talk) 18:16, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
Updated versions
[edit]Hi Kyle, a few months ago you voted to delete the sidebar Template:Moses. The closer of the discussion stated I can see a world where a more narrowly-defined sidebar is recreated, as this was the primary concern of those in favour of deletion.
, so I've updated and significantly trimmed User:Wikieditor662/Template:Moses and User:Wikieditor662/Template:Abraham . What do you think of the updated versions? And any farther suggestions will be appreciated. Wikieditor662 (talk) 11:01, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
- I think you should read the room and don't put those back, so we don't have to waste our time deleting them again. No one wants sidebars. MediaKyle (talk) 11:25, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
No one wants sidebars.
That's definitely not true... for example for these ones, from the quotes I showed you for this one, as well as some other replies. In general, sidebars like for Jesus (Template:Jesus) or Genghis Khan (Template:Genghis Khan) have not been deleted what-so-ever. Wikieditor662 (talk) 18:08, 14 August 2026 (UTC)

Growth/Newsletters/36
[edit]
Updates from the Growth team on our work to improve the new editor experience.
Recent releases
[edit]Account creation experiments
[edit]Several experiments to increase successful account creation have delivered significant results.
- An updated message shown to logged-out mobile users who try to edit produced a 27% relative increase in account creation and is being scaled to all wikis. (T424595)
- A new account menu button in the mobile web header, A/B tested across five Wikipedias with nearly 8 million participants, made logged-out mobile users 25% more likely to create an account, with no significant difference in constructive editing behavior. (T428220)
- A simpler post-edit dialog for temporary account holders increased permanent account creation by 87% (relative), converting more temp editors into registered ones. (T416418)

The redesigned account creation form increases registration by a relative 24.4% - We also redesigned the account creation form itself (T409236): adding real-time username validation, a concise summary of the username policy, a "reveal password" option, and a simplified design aligned with Codex guidelines. In an A/B test on English Wikipedia mobile, users who saw the redesigned form created permanent accounts at a rate of 20.4%, compared to 16.4% for the control group (a 24.4% relative increase).
Revise Tone structured task
[edit]Revise Tone helps newcomers identify passages that may contain non-encyclopedic language and guides them through revising the tone. In A/B testing on Arabic, English, French, and Portuguese Wikipedias, newcomer task completion rates were 38.7% higher than the default Copyedit task, with no decrease in edit quality. The test ended July 9, and the feature is now available to everyone on these wikis, configurable via Community Configuration. We plan to release Revise Tone to more wikis.
Automated mentor list cleanup
[edit]Communities can now automatically mark inactive mentors as away or remove them from mentorship entirely (which automatically reassigns their mentees). Inactivity is based on edits, and talk page responses count, so mentors answering mentee questions remain active. We recommend enabling both options together; administrators can enable them via Special:CommunityConfiguration and review the mentor list at Special:ManageMentors.
Growth features for Wikidata
[edit]Growth features are now available at Wikidata, including a simplified Newcomer Homepage, Mentorship, the Impact module, Community Updates and the Help Panel.
Work in progress
[edit]
Home
[edit]The Growth and Moderator Tools teams are developing Home (T419358): a unified, personalized landing page intended to replace the Newcomer Homepage. Rather than remaining a newcomer-only feature, Home will evolve with users as they gain experience, surfacing Suggested Edits, edits to review, and moderation workflows at the right moment.
Research
[edit]The Wikimedia Research team, in partnership with the Growth Team, published findings from two projects on how new editors learn and integrate into the community:

Highlights
- Improving Account Creation process: As part of Account Creation Experiments an improved account creation form has been released. The form now provides live username validation, a clearer username policy popover, and a reveal password button. We also removed redundant elements and jarring warning messages, improved the form's information hierarchy, and aligned the design with Codex design system guidelines.
- Create charts from your own data: The new ChartWizard makes the Chart extension more beginner-friendly by allowing editors to create charts, such as bar and pie charts, without needing to use JSON. The ChartWizard is now available on Wikimedia Commons. Feedback on the new tool is welcome on the wish talk page.

Wikimedia Foundation Bulletin 2026 Issue 16
[edit]

Highlights
- Simplifying account creation: The Special:CreateAccount page has been simplified as part of ongoing work to modernize the account creation experience. Multiple account creation experiments show that a simpler form helps newcomers complete registration.
- Movement Ecosystem strategy: Deadline to provide feedback on the first version of the proposal are extended until Sep 30 to allow more time for community feedback and discussion.
- New format for the Community Wishlist: You can read the proposed ideas on Meta. This new process plans to improve how wishes are triaged, voted on, and prioritized in a way that is transparent and balanced across project families and language editions. Please let us know what you think will work well or if there are ways to make this proposal stronger. This consultation is open for two weeks.

- Improving page performance: In order to improve page performance, images now load when they are viewed. This means images that are lower down within an article will not load if a reader never scrolls to that part of the page, which may affect some image-related metrics.
- Android Reading list updates: Some of the recent Android releases include updates to the Saved feature. This first round of changes on the Android app include redesigning the "Saved" tab to include an "All articles" view, and remove the user-facing default "Saved" reading list.
- Reading list on desktop: Reading lists has been released on Chinese, Bengali, Czech, and Vietnamese Wikipedias. The feature is now available for logged-in users on those wikis.
- Event Registration tool: The Worklist feature for the Event Registration tool is now live on all Wikimedia wikis. With Worklist, event organizers can add the articles their event will focus on directly to the event page. The Worklist also powers Event Pathways which notifies other editors of the upcoming or ongoing event when they edit an article featured in the event’s Worklist.
- Call for Projects and Mentors for Outreachy: Wikimedia is participating in Round 33 of the Outreachy program that runs from December 2026 through March 2027. The deadline to submit projects on Phabricator is Sept 4 at 4pm UTC and the project list will be finalized by Sep 11.
