Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia.

You might find these links helpful in creating new pages or helping with the above tasks: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.

  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

Wanted to add my welcome, also. Thank you for all your effort on various pine species. You are obviously an expert. Feel free to say as much or as little about yourself as you wish at User:MPF -- hike395 22:58, 18 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

  1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
  2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 20:23, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

With regards to what you said on my talk page, I will put this in a simple fashion. Anyone using the GFDL can use Wikipedia's articles in their own project. But other open/free projects (WikiTravel for example) use a different, incompatible license, so we can't share with those projects and they can't share with us. What many of us feel is that the license that they use is better and that it's more important that more people be able to use our articles than it is that we keep them from always being able to be used at Wikipedia. Does that help to explain it? (Please reply at my talk page) -- Ram-Man 20:54, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

The commons namespace

Just thought I'd let you know: Wikimedia Commons is covered by the interwiki map. To make a link, use (pagename). Alphax Ď„ξχ 00:03, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

Pecan

[edit]

As far as I can see, there is no mention on the plant link you gave in which it says Caps are permissible. If you go to Oak, for instance, you will see that the white oaks link to White Oak but that otherwise they are referred to in the text as white oaks, NOT White Oaks. Ditto for Elm, Cedar, and Pine, which were the first three trees I thought of at random. If your wrong capitalization is indeed in use elsewhere in Wiki articles, please point me at a couple of them. And, of course, just because something wrong is repeated in multiple articles, that doesn't make it right.... Hayford Peirce 01:12, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

CS1 error on Exhibition Park, Newcastle

[edit]

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Exhibition Park, Newcastle, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A missing title error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add a title to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help). Below are the references causing this error:
    • chroniclelive.co.uk https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/new-floating-ecosystem-installed-newcastles-29885309. Retrieved 2026-08-26. cite web: Missing or empty |title= (help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 23:21, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to Norfolk Island when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Specifying |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= needs to be defined in the template in order to work. You can look at the documentation for the template being used, but it is also helpful to use the preview button before saving an edit; this helps find any errors that have been made and ensures that the values added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is highly recommended that editors use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions of if I can help explain further, please let me know! You can also contact the help desk for assistance. Thank you. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:19, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Zackmann08 thanks for the note; but in that case, the parameter needs to be corrected, as the correct term is named after (named in honour of), and not "named for" (named at the request of). I realise the two terms are treated largely synonymously in American, but they have very different meanings in UK, Australian, etc., English, and this needs to be given correctly. Can you edit the relevant template(s) to correct this, please? - MPF (talk) 11:54, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The fact that the parameter need to be corrected is not relevant. You broke the page by changing it and not previewing your edit. If you feel that the parameter needs to be added to Infobox dependency, you can start a discussion at Template talk:Infobox dependency. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:02, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Zackmann08 - as far as I can see on checking back, one line became invisible; very easy to miss, and the page was hardly "broken" in the usual sense that the whole page became unreadable (it didn't; if it had, I would have realised something was amiss). I usually do use the preview, but don't always bother for minor typo corrections, which is what this was (or should have been). Correcting a spelling error should not be generating "unknown parameters"; if it does, then the template is at fault for not recognising the correct spelling, not me. Please moderate your language! - MPF (talk) 17:02, 30 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

candidate for deletion: spring greens

[edit]

Speedy deletion nomination of Spring greens

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Spring greens requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

The existence of this article is causing confusion and spreading misinformation. There is no such cultivar of cabbage called 'Spring Greens'. Instead, this term is more similar to "microgreens". WRT to cabbages specifically, it just means the first few cabbages that start in the spring. Since you can eat them at this stage, they are sometimes sold as spring greens. More often B. o. var acephala varieties are grown for this purpose because the leaves are loose but it does not necessarily mean there exists a variety of B. o. var acephala called Spring Greens.

To add to the confusion, spring greens (broad term) is a generic term used around the world to refer to edible greens that emerge in the spring. This phenomenon is well-known around the world. In Korea it's called bom-namul, in Greek it's called horta, in Japanese its called sansei, and in English we call it "spring greens".

All of the (unsourced) claims about the nutrient content of spring greens are misleading because there is no such cultivar.

It is suggested that we simply add a note on the page for Acephala group that says that many varieties are often eaten as spring greens (i.e. picked before maturity) and name Spring greens (broad term) back to just Spring greens.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, tagged pages may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can request undeletion. Hello MPF. Thank you for adding the taxobox image of sekino kamesugi - a magnificent specimen and a lot more impressive than the rather modest ones comprising Kew’s little sugi grove in my recent photo. I see from your profile that you live in Northumberland. My partner’s family hail from the far North of that county. Small world. Flobbadob (talk) 22:56, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
