🇨🇴Collaboration project in Colombia🇨🇴
The Resilient Coasts project includes a special living lab in Varadero, focused on coral reef restoration. The coral in Cartagena Bay is resilient, surviving years of destructive fishing practices and contamination. Still, the communities don’t want to wait for further degradation before establishing restoration and monitoring protocols.
In collaboration with @coralesdepaz local divers are deploying thousands of coral fragments on “reef stars” (first picture).
Meanwhile, many neighbors on the island of Bocachica have completed their scuba diving and Reef Check trainings. They are monitoring changes in the local reefs.
This is how we build capacity for change. All of us must work on projects in different areas simultaneously. This is how we support planet health.
Data doesn’t lie: reefs do better when we protect them.

The 2026 American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) Symposium was an incredible opportunity for our Reef Check staff to connect with like-minded members of the marine biology community. The symposium was held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, providing space for collaborations, workshops, panels, and new technologies.
At Reef Check, our focus is community science and bringing recreational divers into scientific study. It was a treat to learn from so many talented people and to bring our mission to an even bigger scientific platform.
Thank you to everyone who joined this event, and a special thanks to @aaus.scientific.diving and @scripps_ocean for making it happen!

BOO!
Our Dive Into Science team of young scientific divers got spooky at Catalina Island. Although we are serious about their training as scuba divers and scientists, it’s important to make the work fun too👻
Have fun this weekend and be safe out there, divers!
