Root Sports Northwest history, coverage, features
Root Sports Northwest, also known simply as Root Sports, is an American regional sports network that was founded in November 1988. It is owned by the Major League Baseball franchise, the Seattle Mariners, and mainly broadcasts sporting events involving professional teams based in Seattle and Portland.Root Sports broadcasts throughout the Pacific Northwest, covering areas in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, and Montana. Additionally, the network has enjoyed nationwide carriage via satellite TV providers, including DirecTV and Dish Network.
The network was initially called Northwest Cable Sports at its 1988 launch before undergoing a series of rebrands, ultimately being renamed Root Sports in April 2011. Tele-Communications Inc. and Viacom were the original founders, although ownership changed hands over the years, passing through Fox Sports Net, DirecTV, and eventually the Seattle Mariners in April 2013.
While collegiate sports have featured on the network, its coverage predominantly centers around professional American sports franchises based in Seattle and Portland. This includes the NHL team Seattle Kraken, which was featured on the network from January 2021 to April 2024, and the NBA team Portland Trail Blazers, for which they held regional television rights from June 2021 to August 2024.
Additionally, matches and full game replays of Seattle Sounders FC and Portland Timbers have been key elements of the network’s programming. However, Root Sports is most synonymous with regional live television coverage of the Major League Baseball franchise Seattle Mariners, which includes live games, pregame and post-game shows, and additional content.
Root Sports Network introduced an overflow channel in October 2021 named “Root Sports Plus” to assist with live game coverage of the Seattle Mariners, Seattle Kraken, and Portland Trail Blazers during schedule conflicts. Furthermore, the network launched Root Sports Stream in 2025, a direct-to-consumer streaming platform that allows Root Sports subscribers to watch the Seattle Mariners blackout-free for no additional cost. However, a subscription to a TV provider with Root Sports carriage is required.
