Dr. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman
Formula:
Cs[B5O6(OH)4] · 2H2O
Specific Gravity:
2.230 (Calculated)
Crystal System:
Monoclinic
Name:
Named in honor of Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (7 November 1888, Thiruvanaikoil, Tiruchirappalli, Madras Presidency, British India - 21 November 1970, Bangalore, Karnataka, India), physicist. He was awarded the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics for discovering what is now called Raman scattering. Raman spectroscopy is based on this effect and is now an important tool for mineral identification, and was critical for the discovery of this mineral.
The second Cs borate mineral after londonite (discluding the B-bearing silicate minerals kirchhoffite and odigitriaite). Also the sixth oxysalt mineral (discluding silicates) with species-defining Cs after cesiodymite (sulphate), caesiumpharmacosiderite (arsenate), margaritasite (vanadate), mccrillisite (phosphate), and londonite.
