AULD CLOOTIE: ‘The Devil’ (dsl.ac.uk/our-publicatio…). #Scots has many names for the Devil. Both Auld Clootie and Auld Cloots refer to his feet. A cloot is, “one of the divisions in the hoof of cloven-footed animals”. Happy #Halloween! 👿

FLAUCHTER: ‘To pare turf from the ground’ (dsl.ac.uk/our-publicatio…). This is done with a flauchter-spade, which is, “a two-handed spade with a broad heart-shaped blade used for cutting surface turf”. The cut pieces of turf are flauchter-fail, fail being a #Scots word for turf.

PASSREMARKABLE: ‘Too ready to comment’ (dsl.ac.uk/our-publicatio…). The earliest example we've found is from a 1945 edition of the Scotsman, which asserts the term as “peculiar to Glasgow”. #Scots

CHEERYBYE: ‘A cheerful farewell greeting’ (dsl.ac.uk/our-publicatio…). This is indeed a #Scots term, and the Oxford English Dictionary agrees that it is “originally and chiefly Scottish”. As Ena Lamont Stewart writes in Men Shall Weep (1947): “Well, I awa. Cheeribye, everybody”.
