Michael Mantler (fĂždt 1943) er en Ăžsterriksk komponist og trompetist i new jazz og samtidsmusikk.[8]

Karriere

Mantler ble fĂždt i Wien og flyttet til USA i 1962 for Ă„ studere musikk. I New York ble han en del av avantgardemiljĂžet innen jazz, blant annet gjennom samarbeid med Cecil Taylor. Han var med pĂ„ Ă„ grunnlegge Jazz Composers’ Orchestra Association (JCOA), en non-profit-organisasjon for bestillingsverk og innspillinger for jazzorkester.

I 1972 etablerte han New Music Distribution Service, en distribusjonsordning for uavhengige plateselskaper. Mantler samarbeidet tett med Carla Bley, som han var gift med fra 1967 til 1992, og turnerte blant annet med Carla Bley Band. De fikk datteren Karen Mantler.

Han har utgitt flere album med hovedvekt pÄ komposisjon, inkludert verk med musikere fra London Symphony Orchestra og innspillinger basert pÄ tekster av blant andre Samuel Beckett og Harold Pinter. Albumet Many Have No Speech (1987) kombinerer kammerorkester med solister og vokalister som Jack Bruce, Marianne Faithfull og Robert Wyatt.

Karriere i Europa

I 1991 forlot Mantler USA og flyttet til Europa, der han siden har delt tiden mellom KĂžbenhavn i Danmark og SĂžr-Frankrike. Kort tid etter ble et nytt orkesterverk bestilt av Donau Festival og urfremfĂžrt nĂŠr Wien i 1991 av det Ăžsterrikske TonkĂŒnstlerorchester, med Andy Sheppard som solist.

Gjennom 1990-Ă„rene mottok Mantler flere bestillinger fra europeiske ensembler og kringkastere, blant annet Danmarks Radios Big Band og nordtyske radiokor. Albumet DĂ„rskap Ă„ Se Alt Dette, utgitt av ECM i 1993, inneholder instrumentale verk samt tonesetting av Samuel Becketts siste dikt, fremfĂžrt av Jack Bruce.

I 1993 etablerte han Chamber Music and Songs Ensemble, som ble sentralt i hans videre arbeid. Flere stĂžrre verk fulgte, blant annet Cerco un Paese Innocente (1995), The School of Understanding (1997) og One Symphony (2000), urfremfĂžrt av orkestre tilknyttet europeiske radiostasjoner.

PĂ„ 2000-tallet fortsatte Mantler Ă„ komponere og spille inn verk for kammerensembler og orkester, ofte basert pĂ„ litterĂŠre tekster av blant andre Paul Auster og Ernst Meister. Han mottok flere Ăžsterrikske utmerkelser for sitt livsverk, og antologien Review (2006) dokumenterer opptak fra perioden 1968–2000.

Senere prosjekter inkluderer Concertos, For Two (2011) og Comment c'est (2017), sistnevnte utgitt av ECM etter premiere i Wien.
