Omarchy 4.5 (aka Quattro RS!) is the first big feature release since Quattro, and it’s a whopper: over 740 pull requests merged from more than 180 contributors in just twelve weeks. It now offers a traditional desktop mode next to the tiling default. You can install it natively on a M1/M2/M3/Neo MacBooks. And it speaks 50 languages. ⚠️ This is a release candidate, not a final release. Expect bugs, rough edges, and the occasional thing that breaks outright. Run it on a test machine, or make sure you have a working backup (or a snapshot you know how to roll back to) before you upgrade a machine you depend on.

Omarchy 4.5 is the first feature release since Quattro. It speaks 50 languages, gives every monitor its own workspaces, adds floating workspaces with a dock, rebuilds notifications, gathers how the desktop looks into a new Appearance menu, plays theme intros, and ships four new default apps: Hype, Monologue, Signed, and Disktree. Underneath, it installs in about half the time, it's faster from boot to theme switching, and it runs on NVIDIA N1x and Snapdragon X laptops.

Try it on an existing machine with Update > Channel > RC, then Update > Omarchy. Please report anything that breaks on GitHub.

Install on new machines with the ISO:

Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, Neo):

Breaking changes

The boot menu stays out of the way now. Limine waits 1 second instead of about 6 and boots quietly, so most of the time you won't see the menu at all. That's fine for 90% of boots. When you need a different entry or a snapshot, keep tapping any key (the down arrow works) while the machine starts and it'll stop at the menu. To keep the menu up longer for good, set your own timeout: in /boot/limine.conf (for example timeout: 5); updates leave a timeout you set alone.

Some shortcuts moved:

  • Calculator: Super + Ctrl + Q is now Super + Shift + Q.
  • Activity: Super + Ctrl + T is now Super + Shift + T, and Super + Ctrl + T opens themes.
  • Network: Super + Ctrl + W is now Super + Ctrl + N, and Super + Ctrl + W opens backgrounds.
  • Nightlight no longer has a shortcut (it was Super + Ctrl + N); it's in Trigger > Toggle.
  • Super + Alt + Space opens Apps from the dock instead of the Apps menu.

Notification shortcuts changed:

  • Super + Comma acts on the newest card (dismisses it, opens it, or presses its one button) instead of only dismissing it.
  • Dismissing the last one moved to Super + Alt + Comma, which used to open it.
  • Silencing moved from Super + Ctrl + Comma to Super + Ctrl + Alt + Comma; Super + Ctrl + Comma now hands you keyboard control.

A few keys work differently:

  • Super + Tab, Super + Shift + Tab, Super + Ctrl + Tab, and Super + scroll stay on the current monitor's workspaces, since every monitor has its own.
  • In a terminal, Super + C and Super + V send Ctrl + Shift + C and Ctrl + Shift + V instead of Ctrl + Insert and Shift + Insert.

New defaults that could collide with bindings of your own: Super + Q (close window, alongside Super + W), Super + A (select all), Super + M (minimize to the dock), Super + Grave and Super + Shift + Grave (Quake console), Super + Alt + L (previous layout), Super + Shift + Ctrl + Arrows (move a window to another monitor), Super + Ctrl + Alt + C (screenshot), Super + Ctrl + Alt + E (world clock), Super + Ctrl + Alt + F (full screen desktop), and holding Right Alt for push-to-talk dictation.

Highlights

Add Omarchy in 50 languages

Pick a language under Setup > Language or run omarchy language <code>. The menu, desktop, and Omarchy's notifications switch immediately, and the system locale follows on next login.

Add floating workspaces with a dock

Super + L now cycles a workspace between dwindle tiling, scrolling, and floating, and the bar shows which layout each workspace uses. On a floating workspace every window floats with a titlebar in your theme's colors, and a dock shows your pinned apps, everything running, and a grid of every app. Drag to reorder or pin, right-click for more, and set the dock's position and auto-hide under Appearance > Dock. Super + M minimizes a window to the dock.

Give each monitor its own workspaces

Super + 1-0 now goes to the workspaces of the monitor you're on, and each monitor gets its own set of workspaces. You're also able to navigate intelligently using Super + Arrows to navigate to and from other displays. This combination provides a much more consistent and predictable experience for multi-monitor users.

Add new, enhanced notifications

Notifications now stack by sender. Action buttons, verification codes, and links work right from the card, and cards follow your theme. Identical notifications from the same sender collapse into one.

Super + Comma acts on the newest card: it dismisses it, opens it, or presses its one button, and hands you the keyboard when there's more than one choice. Super + Ctrl + Comma takes you straight there; number keys press buttons, Enter clicks the card, and the arrow keys move between cards. The bell in the bar turns on Do Not Disturb, and Super + Shift + Alt + Comma brings back the last day of notifications.

Add an Appearance menu for how the desktop looks

Everything about how the desktop looks now lives in one top-level Appearance menu, right before Trigger, and it takes over the old Style menu: theme, background, font, the menu bar, windows (gaps, corners, opacity, and the one-window ratio), branding, the dock, each workspace's layout, animations, and the unlock screen.

Add video wallpapers and theme intros

Backgrounds can be videos on the desktop, now played by OWE, and the lock screen shows a still frame from them. Themes play a short silent intro at login and when you switch to them; turn intros off under Appearance > Animations.

Introduce the F1 installer for even faster installs

The new F1 installer unpacks a prebuilt root image and adds this machine's packages on top, instead of installing about 940 packages one by one. This results in incredibly faster install times!

Boot in about a second, quietly

Limine's menu wait drops from about six seconds to one, boot is silent, and binfmt registration no longer stalls startup. Press any key during boot to reach the menu.

Speed up theme switching, menus, panels, and the bash prompt

The theme picker opens right away instead of after about 245 ms. Menus and panels open straight from Hyprland shortcuts, so a keypress no longer starts a process first (about 60 ms each time). The Omarchy menu's three slowest checks went from about 200 ms to about 16 ms, a new terminal sho...

@ryanrhughes ryanrhughes released this 19 Oct 22:49

This patch release resolves a few small hiccups specific users encountered with v4.0.5.

You can upgrade existing machines with Update > Omarchy.

Install on new machines with the ISO:

Fixes

  • Fix updates stopping at the OpenClaw migration from 4.0.5 by @spencerbull in #14212
  • Fix the OpenClaw move stopping updates when you have your own OpenClaw by @emirb in #15875
  • Fix the screen sometimes not locking before suspend by @dhh in #14978
  • Fix the boot passphrase prompt using a non-Latin keyboard layout by @kevincardwell in #14885
  • Fix updates stopping at the console migration when the Limine config replaces the kernel command line by @omarchybot in #15852
  • Fix TUXEDO laptop drivers failing to build on the Omarchy kernel by @bastidotnet in omacom/omarchy-pkgs#1244

Full Changelog: v4.0.5...v4.0.6

If you installed OpenClaw yourself

If ~/.local/bin/openclaw is your own npm install, the update leaves it alone and doesn't move Omarchy's OpenClaw, and after a reboot the OpenClaw gateway fails to start. To finish the move, run:

mv ~/.local/bin/openclaw ~/.local/bin/openclaw.mine && systemctl --user reset-failed openclaw-gateway.service && omarchy-install-openclaw-cli --now && systemctl --user start openclaw-gateway.service

This release brings our bespoke kernel to everyone. The Omarchy kernel is tuned to keep the desktop responsive and multitasking smooth, even under heavy load or memory pressure. It improves gaming compatibility, enables smoother gaming on supported AMD HDMI displays, speeds up common Btrfs file operations, and refines power management. It also fixes everyday hardware frustrations, including missing audio, unresponsive touchpads, display freezes, and slow startup or resume on affected machines.

You can upgrade existing machines with Update > Omarchy.

Additional agentware is here

Add OpenClaw as a desktop app and default coding agent by @spencerbull

Install OpenClaw from Install > AI, open its Control UI as an app, or choose its terminal interface as your default agent. Omarchy manages onboarding and the local user gateway; removal asks before deleting your data.

Add Hermes Desktop and terminal-agent integration by @spencerbull and @smfworks

Install Hermes from Install > AI and use the same installation from the desktop, terminal, and default-agent launcher. Prompted sessions use the native interactive interface, and Omarchy skills are linked into Hermes.

More agents, more everywhere!
