The store you know. The story you don't.

When Steve Jobs hired Ron Johnson to create the Apple Store in 2000, conventional wisdom said that the internet would put stores out of business. By the time he left Apple in 2011, Johnson and his team had created the most respected and profitable retail stores in the world. And even then, skeptics were still predicting the death of physical retail.

In Shop Different, Johnson reveals how it happened: how he earned Jobs's trust, how they developed a vision for a store that would win not by selling but by serving, and how he convinced Jobs that the store's service philosophy should be rooted in something as intangible as love. Johnson then gives readers a new look at Apple's ascent to the most valuable company in the world; offers an inspiring vision for a future in which retailers win on connection, service, and experience; and shares an honest look at what leads to successand what can follow.

Shop Different is not a traditional business book. It is an insider account of one of the most important retail successes of our time, a guide for anyone trying to lead through technological change, and, in the age of artificial intelligence, a profound reminder of what it means to be human.

Kindness at Scale: How Values Built the Apple Store

Fascinating history and beautifully written. The book enhances a naturally compelling story through three threads: First, it is a story of Johnson’s journey toward and in retail, where he found a vocation. This is a compelling story on its own. Second, it illustrates his philosophy and worldview, rooted in his upbringing surrounded by people of extraordinary character and who helped cultivate his intuitive genius. Third, it captures the important nuts and bolts history. These three pieces - personal journey, worldview, and history - make for a compelling and memorable read.

Through the book’s story Johnson illustrates how he embedded values into his work - kindness, the Golden Rule - in a way that enabled him to live out a vocation while having impact. Jobs has been described as having a distinctive worldview, and Johnson has this as well. He describes the process of co-creating the stores which reveals how these were an expression of creativity and innovation. It’s easy to look back in retrospect and see them as inevitable when in reality they were far from it. Their creation was an expression of values-driven authenticity, along with savvy and hard-nosed execution.

The book is an important story of both remarkable business and living one’s vocation.
