    • 2025 September 26, Grant Maloy Smith, “What Is a Strain Gauge Sensor and How Does It Work?”, in DEWESoft‎[2], archived from the original on 14 November 2025:
A strain is a dimensionless quantity and is usually expressed in percentages. Typical measures for strain are less than 2 mm/m for steel and are often expressed in micro-strain units. One microstrain is the strain producing deformation of one part per million.
    • (Can we date this quote?), “What is a Strain Gage?”, in Micro-Measurements‎[3] (in English), archived from the original on 13 December 2025:
Although it has no dimensions, strain is usually expressed in units represented as ε, which is in/in or mm/mm. Since the magnitude of the measured strain is small, the standard practice is to use units of microstrain (µε), which is [ε x 10^-6].

Etymology

[edit]

Both Gardiner and Allen suggest the preposition could be a reduplication of m (“in”).[1][2] Gardiner takes the adverb separately and considers it apparently an 18th Dynasty development from jmj.[3]

Pronunciation

Preposition

[edit]
mm
  1. among

Usage notes

[edit]

Only used with plural pronouns and plural nouns, e.g. ẖrd mm bꜣkw (“a child among the servants”) or nouns with a plural sense, e.g. ngꜣw mm mnmnt (“A steer amongst the herd”).

mm is used in a more abstract or general sense than jmjtw, which refers more to a specific physical position among some nouns.
