Ship with AI. Own What You Ship: Building Continuum to Solve Knowledge Debt

AI coding tools make it easier than ever to build software. A few
prompts can turn an idea into a working feature.

But there is a trade-off: you can end up with code that works, but
that you cannot explain, debug, or confidently change.

I think of this as knowledge debt.

I built Continuum for the Meta Global AI Developer Hackathon, in the
Build for Your World track, to address that problem.

The idea is simple:

AI can help you build the software. But you should understand what it
built before moving on.

Meet Continuum

Try Continuum live

Continuum is a personal multi-agent coding system that combines
AI-assisted implementation with a deliberate understanding check.

Unlike a typical coding agent that moves from one task to the next as
soon as code is generated, Continuum puts a Knowledge Gate between
steps. The next step stays locked until you explain the changes and
answer questions about the code.

1. Plan the work

Describe the next concrete piece of work. The orchestrator turns it into
a plan of 3-6 steps, giving each step a clear objective.

2. Let specialized workers build

Continuum uses separate code, test and research workers. They can use
tools such as write_file, read_file, run_python and run_tests
inside the project workspace.

3. Verify the result independently

After a worker finishes, Continuum reruns the tests and inspects the
actual changes. It does not rely only on the worker's summary to decide
whether the step is complete.

4. Prove you understand the changes

This is the central idea behind Continuum.

Before the next step unlocks, you must:

  • Explain the changes in your own words.
  • Answer questions grounded in the code that was actually changed.
  • Submit your explanation by typing or speaking.

The voice workflow uses Muse Voice Transcribe, so you can speak your
explanation and review the transcript before submitting it.

5. Adapt when you get stuck

Continuum tracks areas where you struggle and can make later Knowledge
Gates stricter on those topics. If you fail two checks in a row, it
revises the plan and adds a prerequisite learning step before
continuing.

The goal is not to slow development down for its own sake. It is to make
sure that progress also builds understanding.

Try it yourself

Open the live app and try a small task. Pay attention to what happens after the agents finish: the Knowledge Gate asks you to explain the work before you can continue.

If the app is waking from Render's free tier, the first load may take a
little longer.

If the idea interests you, like or repost my announcement on X and share your thoughts.

Built with Meta technologies

Meta's models power different parts of the system:

  • Muse Spark 1.3 (Meta Model API): Used for orchestration, planning, Knowledge Gate questions and grading and plan revision. Its vision capability is also used to assess screenshots and diagrams in context.
  • Muse Spark Open, served on Baseten: Powers the worker tool-calling loops for code, test and research tasks.
  • Muse Voice Transcribe: Converts spoken plans and Knowledge Gate responses into text that users can review and submit.
  • Muse Code (optional): Can be enabled as an additional coding path. Its output still goes through Continuum's verification and Knowledge Gate workflow.

The interface also traces model calls so users can inspect their
purpose, model and latency. A deterministic offline mode makes it
possible to exercise the product without consuming model credits.

Why build this?

Code generation is only one part of software development. Understanding,
debugging and maintaining that code are just as important.

AI should increase what developers can build, not turn them into passive
operators of tools they do not understand.

That is what Continuum is trying to encourage:

Ship with AI. Own what you ship.
