UPDATED with full list: The movie awards season hits full speed Monday with the nominations for the 77th Golden Globe Awards, where Marriage Story, The Irishman and Netflix led the way on the film side, continuing the streamer’s dominance this year.
Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story led all film nominees with six, one better than its Netflix counterpart Martin Scorsese’ The Irishman, which has been racking up early critics groups nods. Also with five noms was Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which also landed noms for Tarantino in Director and Screenplay, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in the acting categories.
Netflix also nabbed the most TV nominations this morning with 17, edging HBO’s 15. A three-way tie for the most series noms included HBO’s limited series Chernobyl and Netflix’s duo The Crown and Unbelievable with four each. One notable omission on the Netflix TV side though: Ava Duvernay’s When They See Us which was shut out on the overall list.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual kudos-fest honors the best films of the year in 14 categories and television in 11 categories.
Watch on Deadline
The film noms in the past have been fairly accurate barometers of what to expect come Oscar time thanks to the Globes’ splitting of the categories into drama and musical/comedy, ensuring a strong final slate of candidates. On the TV side, the HFPA is more apt to recognize newcomers amid the perennial favorites.
This will all lead up to the Golden Globes ceremony, which returns Ricky Gervais as host for a fifth time. It is set for January 5, 2020 at the Beverly Hilton.
Here’s the list of categories. Check back on Deadline throughout the day as we break down the field:

Newsflash to HFPA: “Booksmart” and “Once Upon a Time in . . . Hollywood” are dramatic theatricals NOT comedic motion pictures. Of course the organization — or any individual who’s seen the pictures — knows that. The manipulation of the characterizations and categories — as many have pointed out in this thread — infuriates and insults not only the artists but the audience as well.
“Booksmart” is an outstanding, true-to-teen-life, heart-breaking drama. Beanie Feldstein is rightfully nominated, but it should be for Best Actress – Drama, NOT “Musical or Comedy.”
If Brad Pitt had the balls his “Once Upon a Time in . . . Hollywood” character so vividly possesses (ed. walking solo and unarmed, the length of the Spahn Ranch’s western street; “Wow”.), he’d have the heads of the morons/clowns/idiots/manipulators who mind boggling-like designate him as Supporting.
“Once Upon a Time . . .” — based in part on real events and people — has nearly as many grisly, on-screen attacks and deaths as “The Irishman” — based in part on real events and people. Can’t someone reprimand the HFPA for miss characterizing a film like Tarantino’s as a comedy?
A “fly on the wall” moment at an agency’s inner office: Do we really suppose that the respective reps for Feldstein and Pitt said, something like, “Hey! Got a great script I want you to read. And it’s a comedy! It’s so funny; ya gotta read it! You’re so right for it. I promise, you’ll have a ball.” ANYONE who’s seen these two titles knows THAT scenario, or a close variation, never happened.
Shocked Megan Mullally (Karen Walker) & Sean Hayes ( Just Jack) are overlooked for their extraordinary work on the NBC comedy Will & Grace. Two Gems. Two National treasures.
I’m just happy “Joker” got some noms
I, like millions and millions of people, don’t have these expensive cable channels. No nominations for the networks ABC, CBS, and NBC, or for FOXTV, TNT, HGTV, etc. what about Mariska Hartigay, Sam Waterson, Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, The Resident, The Good Doctor, 911, Chicago PD, and the many fine actors in these programs. The Emmy nominations cover only a small exclusive group not available to the majority of the viewing public. Not interested in watching the Emmys; nominations are on unknowns!
The broadcast networks simply don’t air the shows that possess the depth, sophistication, and quality of those series and limited series from cable networks and streaming services. That’s just a fact. Mediocrity shouldn’t be rewarded. I happen to work for one of the four major broadcast networks and have for 20+ years so I see what we air vs what I choose to consume on my own for entertainment and you simply can’t compare the two. The shows you are citing above are cartoons compared to quality like SUCCESSION, CHERNOBYL, OZARK, MRS. MAISEL, BARRY, VEEP, etc.
The HFP have 1 priority to try to get as many viewers to tune in: get as many celebrities as possible.
Aniston’s acting in The Morning Show is a fine example of that.
Expensive like your cable t.v. package and dvr?
Yeah, probably a reason for that.
Check them out from your library!
Jennifer Lopez & Tom Hanks Supporting Roles Really !
No kidding! Just goes to show, the HFPA compromises the integrity of the Golden Globes for the sake of the red carpet/TV broadcast.
