GitHub now offers seven certifications, and only one of them has a print book written to its skills outline: GH-900 GitHub Foundations. If you’re studying for GH-200 Actions, GH-300 Copilot or GH-500 Advanced Security, you will be pairing a book about the product with Microsoft’s free course for that exam. Pick the right pair and you skip weeks of chapters that never come up.

We matched every candidate book’s chapter list against the current GitHub certification study guides on Microsoft Learn, then kept the seven GitHub certification books that cover the most of each outline. Self-published question banks did not make the cut, because none of them names a publisher or an author we could check. Exam details come from GitHub’s certification FAQ and the Microsoft Learn study guides, and the prices and stock below were checked in October 2026.

GitHub certification exams and the book for each

Start from the exam you are booking, not from the book. The table maps each GitHub certification to the date its skills outline was last revised and the book we’d pair with it:

Read the third column before the fourth. All three Copilot books here predate the August 2026 GH-300 outline, and the only security-focused pick dates from 2022, four years before the GH-500 outline regrouped its domains under Secret Protection, Supply Chain Security and Code Security. For those two exams, the book teaches you the product and the free Microsoft Learn course teaches you the current outline. GH-900 is the one case where a single book gets you most of the way.

What a GitHub certification exam involves in 2026

GitHub moved its exams from PSI to Microsoft Learn and Pearson VUE on July 1, 2025, so the logistics now match Microsoft’s own certifications. The GitHub certifications FAQ sets out the rules that shape how much you need to read:

  • Price: $99 per exam, with regional pricing in some countries. Students can get one free voucher for GH-900 or GH-300 through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.
  • Format: for GH-900, GH-200, GH-300, GH-500 and GH-100, 100 minutes with 60 scored multiple-choice questions plus 10 to 15 unscored pretest items, closed book, at a test center or proctored online. GH-600 runs 120 minutes, and GH-700 is still a beta whose scores arrive about eight weeks after the beta closes.
  • Passing score: 700 or higher on every study guide.
  • Retakes: 24 hours before the first retake, 14 days between later ones, and no more than five attempts a year.
  • Validity: GH-900 never expires. GH-200, GH-300, GH-500 and GH-100 last 24 months, and GitHub is moving renewals to Microsoft’s free online assessment.

The closed-book format is why a book still earns its place next to the free course. Microsoft Learn modules walk you through a feature once, while a book gives you the reasoning behind it and something you can reread the night before. Microsoft’s study guides still carry generic text saying certifications renew every year; the GitHub-specific pages say 24 months, and that is the figure we’d plan around.

How we picked these GitHub exam books

A book had to pass three tests before it made this list, and most of the 2026 GitHub titles on Amazon failed the first one:

  • A trade publisher and a named author: Manning, O’Reilly, Packt or Microsoft Press, so you can check who wrote it.
  • A new paperback in stock on Amazon US: confirmed through Amazon’s product API in October 2026.
  • Two or more domains of a current outline: chapter lists from Manning’s livebook, Packt’s GitHub repositories, InformIT and the publisher copy on Amazon, lined up against the study guide weights.

Where a publisher’s chapter list was not available to us, the pick says what the publisher’s description covers and does not guess at the rest.

That rule removed a long tail of 2026 self-published titles promising hundreds of GH-900 and GH-300 practice questions. Some may be fine, but you can’t tell who wrote them or whether the answers match the current outline, and a wrong answer key does more harm than no practice set at all. Microsoft’s official practice assessment for GH-900, now on its AI Skills Navigator, is the safer source of question drills.

1. GitHub Foundations Certification Guide

This is the only book on the list written for a GitHub exam, and it is the one to buy first for GH-900.

GitHub Foundations Certification Guide by Ayodeji Ayodele, GH-900 study book cover
GitHub Foundations Certification Guide, First Edition by Ayodeji Ayodele. Image: Packt.

Ayodeji Ayodele is a senior customer success architect at GitHub, and the cover carries a foreword from GitHub’s senior director of certification and enablement. Its 17 chapters track most of the GH-900 domains: Git basics, repositories, pull requests and code review, issues and GitHub Projects, Discussions, Sponsors, a Copilot chapter, then security practices and user management. Chapter 1 is about preparing for the certification, and chapter 17 closes with mock exams and study strategies.

Packt published it in August 2025 at 252 pages, before the January 2026 outline revision, so check the “modern development practices” and “privacy, security and administration” domains against the study guide as you go. If you have used GitHub daily for a couple of years, you’ll find the first half slow and can skip to the Projects, community and security chapters. Paperbacks ran about $35, so check the current price before you order.

2. GitHub Actions in Action

For GH-200, we’d pick this Manning book first, because of the Actions books we checked it spends the most pages on running Actions for a whole organization.

“Manage GitHub Actions for the enterprise” carries 20 to 25% of the GH-200 score, as much as authoring workflows. Kaufmann, Bos and de Vries spend their runner chapters (5 to 7 of 12) on that domain, and the rest maps onto the other domains:

  • Enterprise runners: GitHub-hosted runners, self-hosted runners with Actions Runner Controller and autoscaling, then runner groups, monitoring and internal billing.
  • Authoring: workflow syntax, triggers and contexts, plus Docker, JavaScript and composite actions.
  • Securing automation: pwn requests, supply chain risk, Dependabot, CodeQL, and a compliance chapter on CODEOWNERS and mandatory workflows.

You also get chapters on CI, CD with environments, and cutting workflow costs. The book runs 256 pages and came out in late 2024, so it has fewer syntax exercises than Laster’s book for the “author and manage workflows” domain. Pair it with the next pick, or with GitHub’s own workflow syntax reference, if YAML expressions and contexts are new to you. It ran about $42 to $50.

3. Learning GitHub Actions

Brent Laster’s O’Reilly book is the better teacher of workflow mechanics, which makes it the stronger GH-200 pick if you’ve never written a workflow file.

At 411 pages it has room for the structure, syntax and semantics of workflows, building custom actions with Docker, JavaScript or shell, and troubleshooting and debugging failed runs. Those topics map straight onto three GH-200 domains: authoring workflows, consuming and troubleshooting them, and authoring actions. It also covers combining actions with the GitHub APIs and running workflows securely.

Where it falls short is age and scope. It was published in September 2023, and the publisher’s description on Amazon does not mention runner groups, Actions Runner Controller or enterprise policy, which is a quarter of the score. Buy it with GitHub Actions in Action rather than instead of it. Copies ran roughly $48 to $66, and stock was thin, so check the current price.

4. The GitHub Copilot Handbook

The standout for GH-300 is the cheapest Copilot book from a major publisher, and its chapter list names agent mode, the coding agent and MCP outright.

Rob Bos also co-wrote GitHub Actions in Action, and here he and Randy Pagels take Copilot through ten chapters. Against the GH-300 outline, you get this coverage:

  • Copilot features (25 to 30%): inline suggestions, chat and agent mode in the IDE, the terminal, and a chapter on issues, pull request reviews and the coding agent on github.com.
  • Data and architecture (10 to 15%), partly: an opening chapter explaining Copilot and generative AI, and a chapter on extending Copilot with MCP. Check the data-flow details against the study guide.
  • Plans: a full chapter on choosing between the Copilot plans and what each one includes.

The closing chapters are about the learning curve, rolling Copilot out to a team and building an internal community. That’s useful if you’ll own adoption at work and light on what GH-300 scores. Packt’s chapter list doesn’t name content exclusions or responsible AI, so cover those two domains (25 to 35% combined) from Microsoft Learn. Paperbacks ran about $25 to $35.

5. Learning GitHub Copilot

If you learn best by writing code alongside the text, Brent Laster’s Copilot book is the deeper hands-on pick for GH-300.

O’Reilly published it in August 2025 at 324 pages. It covers inline completions and the chat interface, prompts and context for targeted results, generating tests and documentation, Copilot Edits, agent mode, Copilot Vision, automatic pull request reviews, and building your own Copilot extensions. Its focus on prompts and context makes it a strong fit for the “prompt engineering and context crafting” domain.

It costs nearly twice the Handbook, about $47 to $70, and shipped a year before the August 2026 outline. The publisher’s description doesn’t mention plans, privacy or content exclusions, so it covers how to use Copilot rather than how to govern it. We’d buy it over the Handbook only if you’re a developer who wants the code examples more than the overview.

6. GitHub Copilot Step by Step

Microsoft Press’s entry is the one Copilot book that opens with privacy and responsible AI, the domains the other two leave to Microsoft Learn.

GitHub Copilot Step by Step by Dr. Gomathi S., Microsoft Press book cover
GitHub Copilot Step by Step by Dr. Gomathi S. Image: Microsoft Press.

Dr. Gomathi S., a Microsoft MVP and MCT community lead, wrote it as a 368-page step-by-step course that InformIT dates to January 2026. Chapter 1 covers privacy, responsible AI, limitations and ethics, and chapter 2 covers plan selection, installation and permissions. The remaining chapters work through prompts, debugging, writing tests, code reviews and common pitfalls. That sequence suits GH-300’s “use Copilot responsibly” domain (15 to 20%) and its productivity domain.

Where this falls short is the newer features. The InformIT chapter list has no chapter named for agent mode, the coding agent or MCP, and no admin chapter on Copilot Business or Enterprise policies. It also costs the most of the three Copilot picks, about $52 to $55. Buy it as a second Copilot book if responsible AI and privacy are your weak domains, not as your only one.

7. Accelerate DevOps with GitHub

No current book is written for GH-500 or GH-100, and this 2022 Packt title is the closest single book to both.

Accelerate DevOps with GitHub by Michael Kaufmann, GitHub Advanced Security book cover

Michael Kaufmann’s 23 chapters run from DevOps metrics to enterprise transformation, and three of them matter for GH-500: shift-left security and DevSecOps, securing your code with code scanning, secret scanning and Dependabot, and securing your deployments. For GH-100, the chapters on migrating to GitHub, organizing teams and transforming an enterprise give you the reasoning behind enterprise and organization settings. The two Actions chapters add the runner material that GH-100 weights at 20 to 25%.

The catch is the date. The July 2026 GH-500 outline now uses GitHub’s newer product names, Secret Protection, Supply Chain Security and Code Security, and adds domains on security operations and administration that a 2022 book cannot reflect. GH-100 puts 15 to 20% on identities and access, and we found no chapter in the book named for SAML, SCIM or enterprise managed users. Treat it as background for the concepts, then study the current feature set on Microsoft Learn. It ran about $39 to $44.

Pair each book with the free Microsoft Learn course

Each of the five GH exams has an instructor-led course code on Microsoft Learn, with self-paced modules you can work through for free. These are the pairings we’d use, with the heaviest domain to spend extra time on:

  • GH-900 with GH-900T00: Git and GitHub basics is 25 to 30% of the score, so the Foundations guide’s early chapters are worth doing properly, even if they feel familiar.
  • GH-200 with GH-200T00: authoring workflows and managing Actions for the enterprise are each 20 to 25%. Use Laster for the first and Manning for the second.
  • GH-300 with GH-300T00: Copilot features are 25 to 30%, and responsible use plus privacy and content exclusions add up to 25 to 35%. The book covers the first; the course covers the rest.
  • GH-500 with GH-500T00: no domain is above 20%, so breadth matters more than depth. Read the course first and use Kaufmann for the reasoning behind it.
  • GH-100 with GH-100T00: secure development and compliance is the heaviest domain at 25 to 30%, and no book covers it in its current form.

The GH-300 study guide is a good example of the format: domain weights, the date the skills were last revised, and a change log against the previous version. Print the guide for your exam and tick off each bullet as a book chapter or a Learn module covers it. Anything left unticked a week out is what you study last.

For hands-on practice between chapters, the GitHub CLI cheat sheet covers the repository, pull request, issue and workflow-run commands GH-900 and GH-200 expect you to recognize. If you prefer to build a real pipeline, our walkthrough of Claude Code running in GitHub Actions exercises secrets, permissions and workflow triggers in one project.

Where each book falls short

No GitHub certification book keeps pace with outlines that were all revised during 2026, so plan on these gaps before you buy:

  • GitHub Foundations Certification Guide: written to the pre-2026 GH-900 outline. Check the security and administration domain against the January 2026 study guide.
  • GitHub Actions in Action: strong on runners and enterprise use, thin on syntax drills.
  • Learning GitHub Actions: the reverse, deep on syntax and custom actions, quiet on enterprise management.
  • The GitHub Copilot Handbook: current features, but adoption chapters you won’t be scored on and no named chapter on content exclusions.
  • Learning GitHub Copilot: the most code, the highest price, and no governance material in the publisher’s description.
  • GitHub Copilot Step by Step: good on responsible AI, missing the agent features.
  • Accelerate DevOps with GitHub: the right concepts under product names GitHub has since replaced.

If you only pick one book, make it the one matched to your exam in the first table, and treat the Microsoft Learn course as required rather than optional. We found no book from a trade publisher for the two Agentic AI certifications, GH-600 and GH-700. Our comparison of OpenCode, Claude Code, Cursor and Codex CLI and the Claude Code cheat sheet are better preparation for the agent architecture and tool-use domains than any Copilot title in print. For the Git underneath all of it, the best Git books fill in branching and history, and our list of CI/CD books places GitHub Actions next to the other pipeline tools.
